SHANNON WILSON,INC.
impact driven to tip. Final pile acceptance would be based on the blow count resistance
measured during impact driving as compared to the results of the test piles.
5.2.3 Pile Testing
The axial resistance parameters recommended in this report are based on assumed
subsurface conditions. To substantiate pile embedment for the required capacity, we recommend
that dynamic pile testing be performed on a minimum of two piles. Based on our experience,
dynamic pile testing is a cost-effective method for determining the total ultimate capacities and
load distribution along the piles.
If vibratory installation methods are used to install the piles, an impact hammer will be
necessary to perform the dynamic testing. Dynamic testing is performed by placing instruments
on the pile and obtaining dynamic measurements during driving using a Pile Driving Analyzer
(PDA). Dynamic testing should be performed during a minimum of the last 5 feet of continuous
driving. The test piles should be allowed to set up for a minimum of 72 hours before the restrike
is performed. During restrike, the piles should be driven a minimum of 1 foot. The data
collected are used to calculate pile driving criteria and design lengths. Typically, the Contractor
is required to hire a specialty subcontractor to obtain the PDA measurements and calculate pile
capacity using the Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). The CAPWAP analysis
should be performed for the end of continuous driving condition and the beginning of restrike
condition.
5.3 Settlement and Vibration Due to Pile Installation
Settlement of the existing ground surface could occur during open pipe pile or sheet pile
installation. The settlement could be several inches within 5 feet of the pile-driving operations,
but would generally decrease exponentially with distance away from the pile-driving operations.
If vibratory hammers are used, settlements could be reduced if the hammer allows for variable
moment operation. The Contractor should be prepared to repair pavements and other features
close to the pile driving operations.
5.4 Deadman Anchor Installation
We anticipate that deadman anchors will be installed in an open-cut or shored excavation. The
design of temporary shoring is the responsibility of the Contractor. The Contractor should be
required to submit the shoring design for review and approval prior to the start of construction.
21-1-21761-003-RIf.docr/wp/cIp ?1-1-2 176 1-00
19
