City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1 through December 31,2017
Snohomish County Music Project
Music Therapy Initiative
EXHIBIT A: Program Summary
This music therapy program focuses on violence/delinquency prevention, using music
education as a means rather than an end. While learning basic musical skills and material,
board-certified music therapists help students to develop their ability to follow directions and
self-regulate, as well as experience positive social interactions.
Program Objective: To promote the positive social development of children and youth using
music to inspire disconnected and at-risk children and youth to develop pro-social skills and
attitudes, engage with learning, and develop self-esteem and resiliency skills. .,
Program Components: (1) Students sign up for this program through Horizon Elementary; (2)
music therapists work with the students to build their ability to follow directions, make
decisions, self-regulate, and have positive social interactions at the same time as building their
knowledge of rudimentary music material; (3) and, with each quarter lasting 11 weeks and
culminating in a recital, students are given the opportunity to showcase their skills through
individual and group performance.
Target Population: The agency targets students in grades 2-5 at Horizon Elementary School.
How and When are Services Provided: Six group lessons take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Saturdays with a maximum of 6 students in each group.
Service Providers: Two Board Certified Music Therapists will be responsible for planning and
implementing music therapy programs for designated groups. Interns and practicum students
will also be used as appropriate.
Program Service Units: This funding will support 48 music therapy sessions serving 160 of the
City of Everett's incarcerated youth during this grant cycle.
12 weeks x .75 hrs. = 9 hrs. per student x 40 students = 450 hrs. x 4 sessions = 1,440 units
