City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1 through December 31,2017
Compass Health
Bailey Growth Center
EXHIBIT A: Program Summary
The Compass Health Bailey Peer Center is transitioning into the Bailey GROWTH (G=Growth, R=Recovery,
O=Opportunity, W=Wellness, T=Trust, H=Hope) in January 2016. This funding change requires that we no
longer serve community meals as part of the program. Many of the current groups and activities will continue
but we will also be adding more recovery related activities. The GROWTH Center is a program focused on
hope, recovery, and resilience. It will proved a safe, positive, welcoming environment in which individuals
with behavioral health disorders can work on achieving their personal recovery goals. The GROWTH Center
will provide opportunities for socialization, educational classes/presentations, individual peer support, peer-
run groups, and assistance with accessing needed resources and services. Homeless persons with
behavioral health disorders are included in the target population.
The Bailey GROWTH Center will hold 44 cooking classes during 2017. These classes will assist participants
to gain needed skills and will cover topics such as nutrition and healthy eating, basic cooking skills, healthy
eating on a tight budget, how to read a recipe, how to read food labels, how to prepare and store food safely,
how to manage meals when you are homeless, and other relevant topics. Many of the classes will include
hands on instruction. Participants will prepare and eat what they prepare. These classes may also increase
potential employability of persons who may be interested in working in the food service industry. GROWTH
Center Peer Counselors will assist interested persons in applying for food handler cards.
GROWTH Center will be open the same number of hours and will serve the same target population. It will
be open five days per week at 3322 Broadway in Everett from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Since January 2015,
an average of 375 individuals per month and 98 individuals per day have attended the Bailey Peer Center.
Many of the attendees to the Center are homeless or lack decent, affordable housing. In addition, many of
the individuals who utilize the Bailey Peer Center are also among the most socially isolated in our
community. Their illness (and the associated behaviors) has cost many of them their friends, families, and
jobs. Many lack the skills necessary to accomplish their personal recovery goals. Many have also been
alienated from positive participation in their communities. These losses and prolonged isolation have often
led individuals to lose self-esteem as well as hope for a better life. For these individuals, the Bailey
GROWTH Center will serve as an entryway to a healthier life, increased community connection, and hope.
The Bailey GROWTH Center will be a place where participants are welcomed and respected for who they
are. The safe environment provides the opportunity to develop relationships, make friends, and engage in
meaningful activities. Living in a community where you are feared or avoided and/or where you may fall prey
to drug dealers and criminal acts because of your mental and emotional vulnerability or because you are
homeless and unable to defend yourself, is a high stress life style. The Center offers participants a safe
haven. Peer Counselors assist attendees to identify their needs and to develop recovery plans including
Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) that will assist them in taking steps toward their life goals.
Participants also have the opportunity to complete a Pocket WRAP plan. This plan is ideal for homeless
individuals as it folds into a small document that can be carried in a pocket and is therefore easily accessible.
Pocket WRAP plans include personally chosen strategies for managing symptoms, promoting wellness, and
managing crises.
1
