2. The building embodies the distinctive architectural characteristics of both Colonial
Revival and American Foursquare styles in a mixed-use building design which reflects
the combination of commercial and residential uses in the building. It also reflects the
transition in the United States in the early 1920s from the popularity of Prairie style to a
preference for Colonial Revival style.
3. The building is associated with the lives of persons significant to local history. The
original owners,Nicholas B. Challacombe and Charles H. Fickel, opened the funeral
home under the name Challacombe and Fickel, Inc.in 1923. The building was noted has
being thoroughly modem and having the best equipment.
Prior to that, Challacombe had established himself as a leading business man in Everett
and had been the county coroner for four years. He served as president of the state board
of examiners for embalmers. He is noted for lending his support to every project for
"public growth and betterment". Fickel, a well-known mortician in Everett, also served
as county coroner and as county clerk for four years beginning in 1914.
In the mid-1930s, Walter Precht joined the business as a licensed embalmer and funeral
director and became a partner. Mr. Precht and his wife, Ruth, made their home above the
business, where she lived and managed the office during the war. The Precht family
operated the funeral home until 1984 and had ownership of the building until 2007.
Please see attached the biographies of Challacombe and Fickel and records from Polk's
Directories for more detail.
Sources: History of Snohomish County, Washington, WilliamWhitfield, ed.
Washington,West of the Cascades, Hunt
A Field Guide to American Houses, Virginia& Lee McAlester
" .x.'
