RESOLUTION #:3/23/ <br /> A RESOLUTION in support of the D.A.R.E. <br /> Program <br /> WHEREAS, drug abuse is a serious problem in our community <br /> affecting many of our young people, and <br /> WHEREAS, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is a program <br /> that impacts drug demand through the teaching of refusal skills and <br /> recognition of the pressures that lead to substance abuse , and <br /> WHEREAS, the DARE curriculum consists of a 17-hour intensive <br /> program with four main elements , and <br /> WHEREAS, Everett Police Officers John Burgess and Karen Deckard <br /> attended 80 hours of training to teach the DARE program, and <br /> WHEREAS, the current pilot program is in five of the fourteen <br /> Everett School District elementary schools : Hawthorne, Lowell , <br /> Jackson, Monroe and Emerson, and the Everett Police Department <br /> anticipates involvement in all elementary schools next year, and <br /> WHEREAS, the classes are taught to 5th Graders and the Officer <br /> and students have the opportunity to develop strong rapport , and <br /> WHEREAS, the Everett Police Department ' s Narcotics Program' s <br /> target is the supply of drugs , and the DARE program targets the <br /> demand for drugs by educating students early; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, the Everett City Council believes DARE to be the <br /> single most important program law enforcement can offer our children <br /> to resist this insidious problem, and is committed to the long range <br /> support of this critical program. <br /> Counci member Int oducing <br /> Resolution <br /> PASSED and APPROVED this or( day of March, 1989 <br /> r)/(. ." /7,7 (ACC _ <br /> Council President <br />
