12
WETMORE BUILDING COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS
Planning, CHIP, and divisions of the Police department are
moving into new office space in the Wetmore Building. These
departments currently utilize the Wang computer system in
City Hall . In order to provide these departments with the
same capabilities they currently have, a new computer system
will need to be installed in the Wetmore Building.
These departments primary activity for the computer is word
processing, however the movement to the Wetmore Building will
create the need for additional capability. Applicants for
Business & Occupation Licenses are referred to the Planning
Department to verify that the business is located within the
appropriate land use. By installing this additional computer
system the applicant would be able to have a response from
Planning without having to go to the Wetmore Building. This
could therefore reduce some of the shuffling that the
citizens would be required to do.
The City could also elect to provide the citizens with an
additional location in which to inquire on their Utility
Bills and/or Parking Violations . With some computer program
modifications , the system could also be setup to allow for
payments on Utility Bills , Parking Violations , L. I .D. s , Dog
Licenses , and Business and Occupation Taxes . This would
improve service to the public by providing more than one
location in which to make payments .
The proposed computer system will have adequate capacity to
support the needs of these departments for several years .
The proposed system will have connections for thirty-two
terminals , PCs or printers with the ability to expand to
ninety-six. The initial system will have two megabytes of
memory which is expandable to sixteen megabytes . The
proposed disk storage (290 MB) is only 13% of the maximum
(2, 808 MB) configuration available.
This computer system was in the initial planning for the new
office space and was estimated at a cost of $30 , 000 . This
original price was based on the cost of the computer system
installed at Parks early in 1987 . After the finalization of
the requirements , the amount required to purchase the
computer system is $40 , 879 . 10 . The $11 , 000 difference can be
made up from the savings realized by not moving into the
building in March as originally budgeted.
53
