RESOLUTION #.,;c',y <br /> A RESOLUTION calling for a Public Awareness Task <br /> Force to provide support as necessary to the <br /> Snohomish County Health District as they prepare <br /> for the education of the community to the growing <br /> health problem of Acquired Immunity Deficiency <br /> Syndrome (AIDS) . <br /> WHEREAS, AIDS, Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome, is a <br /> devastating medical condition impacting virtually every aspect <br /> of society; and <br /> WHEREAS, several thousand cases of AIDS have been reported <br /> in our Nation, and presently -- and for the foreseeable future <br /> -- there is no effective treatment, no vaccine, and no known <br /> cure for AIDS; and <br /> WHEREAS, this grim situation has left the medical <br /> community, public officials , business leaders and others <br /> paralyzed to respond to this catastrophic illness and the host <br /> of personal , social , economic and political problems attendant <br /> to it; and <br /> WHEREAS, predictions of the future incidence and spread of <br /> AIDS have brought about a growing consensus that every <br /> community in the nation must be proactive in responding to this <br /> century' s worst epidemic; and <br /> WHEREAS, local governments, community health organizations <br /> and school boards bear the ultimate responsibility for setting <br /> priorities, allocating resources, developing education <br /> initiatives and formulating intervention strategies; and <br /> WHEREAS, it is widely accepted that education of the <br /> general population and also of individuals and groups whose <br /> behavior places them at high risk for AIDS are the most <br /> effective ways to reduce the prospects of Human <br /> Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE EVERETT CITY COUNCIL <br /> that a committed and concerted effort must be made to develop <br /> local AIDS task forces to bring together the groups and <br /> resources of the community to evaluate the issues presented by <br /> AIDS and begin mobilizing community efforts to combat the <br /> disease; and <br /> FURTHER that, a task force be established to include <br /> representatives from local government , the Health District , <br /> school board, medical community and an esthicist from the <br /> religious community to support the efforts of the Snohomish <br /> County Health District, as necessary and where required, in the <br /> development of compatible public program information related to <br /> health activities that will focus the public ' s attention on <br /> this national health djtelase with the ultimate objective of <br /> preventing its growth. , <br /> i <br /> II�, � �i, <br /> fr <br /> Couerlman I roodti i g" <br /> rrResolution <br /> PASSED AND APPRO THIS .-%-- DAY OF ikeiR) e- , 1987 . <br /> p <br /> Co it P4esident <br />
