Introduction
The proposed project site was visited with Herb Carpenter
of Reid Middleton and Associates . The project was reviewed and
the site walked. A second site visit was conducted on November
7 , to look at Union Slough at low tide and to evaluate the
Highway runoff conditions and look at offsite structures that
influence drainage and water storage on the site .
General Conditions
The site is located between I-5 on the west and Union
Slough on the east. There is a 12-15 foot high dike along the
Union Slough boundary that creates a steep slope that is
vegetated by Himalayan blackberry . There is a maintenance road
at the toe of the dike that is overgrown with upland grasses .
The main portion of the site is an agricultural field that is
presently planted to a green fertilizer grass mixture. The
south end of the site is not farmed creating an approximately
2 . 0 acre area that is vegetated with a mix of reed canarygrass
and thistle. The east side of the property is bordered by a
drainage ditch that parallels I-5 . Waters run to the north
through a tide gate off the property. There is a backwater pond
that appear to have been a part of Union Slough or a connector
between Union and Steamboat Sloughs before I-5 was built and
before the inside dike of Union Slough was constructed. It is
now a blind slough that receives its water from road runoff .
In the winter the pond has plenty of water , is flushed and
retains reasonable water quality. In the summer the water drains
dii7
2
