some by the smaller wintering populations . There are no
threatened or endangered species that use the site .
Expected Impacts
The proposed project will eliminate a major portion of
the agricultural fields which will effect open space and by
that act impact the animals and birds that use the area.
However. since the use is low, seasonal and integrated with a
large area the actual impacts will be negligible. Because of
its isolated nature and proximity to the road much of the
expected use has already been impacted . Two phases of the
project which will improve existing conditions are :
1 . The south end of the site will be left undeveloped . The
undeveloped area will be larger than the existing area that is
not farmed . The total of the expected set aside will be between
5 and 6 acres . A dike will be constructed at the north end of
the open space area (see site plan) . The 5+ acres will be
graded to create a 0 . 1 percent or less slope from the north end
to the south end. The highway drainage ditch will be filled and
graded at a greater than 3 :1 slope to the existing highway bank
slope.
The area will be graded to a low swale in the center up to the
highway grade on one side and the Union Slough dike on the
other. The dike will be breached to a depth of approximately -
2 . 0 MSL to create a 5+ acre intertidally flooded
mudflat/brackish water marsh. This intertidal area will provide
year around habitat for shorebirds , waterfowl , mammals and
small birds . With the grading the center of the area will be
from a -2 . 0 to a +1 . 0 MSL mudflat. The sloping to the two banks
a '
edi
