7
and Village Theater the interior changes. Earlier in 2007, plans were suggested for a plaza to
replace the parking lot.
The recession starting in 2008 was bad timing for the project. Seventy-four business leaders
signed a petition to oppose this project in mid-2008. They wanted to tear down the building for
a parking garage and street-level plaza. The Herald issued an opinion against the theater
project on July 9, 2008. However, resistance from several City Council members who were
invested with theater in Everett kept the idea alive. The controversy continued for some time.
It was not until February 23, 2010 that the City Council agreed to collect bids for the project.
By 2012, the city spent $1.3 million renovating the 1963 building. Village Theatre raised $2.8
million. Architects were Designs Northwest Architects and Stig Carlson Architecture. The
builder was Newland Construction.
The building was renamed the Cope Gillette Theatre on Oct 29, 2015 for local philanthropists
Saundra Cope and Walt Gillette.
The 1962 parking lot for the Bank of Everett was "torn down" in 2012 and replaced by the
three-quarter acre Wetmore Theater Plaza between the Cope Gillette Theatre and Everett
Performing Arts Center. The project artist was Linda Beaumont. The plaza's sparkle and
shimmer is affected by the silica-infused black concrete plaza floor, mosaics along a
curvilinear wall, and a fountain. Elements of the design were borrowed from a plaza in
Barcelona, Spain. The plaza cost $2.4 million.
G) Documentation
Everett Herald:
11-08-1892 Founder of Bank of Everett and the Everett Herald, John E.
