3
The Bank of Everett/Cope-Gillette Theatre is a unique building in the Everett downtown core.
Its relatively low, dramatic mid-century roofline contrasts with the buildings from 1892 through
the 1920s, and other less dramatic mid-century buildings from the 1950s through the 1980s.
The Bank of Everett intended to make a bold statement about their modern bank. In its day,
and more than 50 years later, it stands out as a one of a kind relic of the 1960s. Everett is
fortunate that the building has been saved, albeit repurposed for a brand new use.
The interior of the building was extensively remodeled for its conversion from a bank to a
theater in the 1940s.
F) Statement of Significance > , :i_ a ,kj. .' :; Vti wk, i';'' '''
There were actually two banks named the "Bank of Everett". The first bank, established in
1892 by John E. McManus, a prominent Everett developer, was not associated with the
building on California Street and Wetmore Avenue. The first bank was located at the
southwest corner of Hewitt Avenue and Pine Avenue. Designed by Frederick Sexton and
costing $15,000, that bank failed in 1893 during the severe worldwide Silver Panic. The
building was substantially altered in the 1940's, and exists today as the Terracotta Red Asian
Restaurant.
u
j
--
, ' '-' -7-, 7."'" ,.,x
, Ii ''
r, Illi
/ (i f y .. e'r. -- ________,..- i•=- J
I •
} E CASH GROCERY
i
I. .
The first Bank of Everett started in this building in 1892 at Hewitt and Pine Avenue.
