1 B. Jointing:
1. Locate and construct joints in slabs on grade as detailed on drawings or at 8'-0"
centers unless otherwise noted.
2. Start cutting saw-cut joints as soon as concrete is hard enough to avoid
dislodgement of aggregates while sawing, and complete cutting before shrinkage
stresses have developed sufficiently to induce cracking.
C. Floated Finish:
1. Place, consolidate, strike off and level concrete, but do not work it further until
ready for floating. Begin floating when water sheen has disappeared and when
the surface has stiffened sufficiently to permit the operation.
2. During or after the first floating, check plane of surface with a 10 foot straightedge
applied at not less than two different angles, and then cut down all high spots and
fill all low spots to achieve a true plane within 1/4 inch in 10 feet.
3. Refloat slab immediately to a uniform sandy texture.
D. Troweled Finish: Float finish slab as described above, then steel trowel by machine or by
hand. Additional trowelings shall be done by hand after the surface has hardened
' sufficiently. Final troweling shall produce a ringing sound from the trowel and the finished
surface shall be free of trowel marks, uniform in texture, and appearance shall be plane to
the tolerance specified under "Floated Finish" above.
1. Non-Slip Floor Finish (when shown on drawings): Floors called for to have non-
slip finish shall incorporate 25 pounds per 100 square feet of aluminum oxide
grains into the surface. Immediately before floating begins, sprinkle two-thirds of
the abrasive evenly over the surface and float. After embedment, sprinkle the
' remaining one-third at right angles to the previous application. Apply more
heavily in areas not sufficiently covered by the first application, and float again
immediately. Complete finishing operation as specified under"Troweled Finish"
above.
2. Broom Finish: Slabs for exterior building walks and slabs shall be given a course
transverse scored texture by drawing a broom across the surface. This operation
shall follow immediately after floating as outlined above.
' 3.09 CURING AND PROTECTION
A. General: Beginning immediately after placement, protect concrete from drying,
' excessively hot or cold temperatures and mechanical injury. Keep moisture loss to a
minimum until cement has hydrated and concrete is hard.
B. Curing:
1. Formed Surfaces: Keep forms wet. Cool metal forms exposed to the sun with
water.
2. Slabs: Immediately after finishing, apply one of the materials specified in article
entitled Curing Materials for Slabs, but use membrane forming liquid only with
approval. Keep burlap continuously wet.
3. Duration of curing: 7 days minimum.
C. Protection:
1. In cold weather, maintain the moisture conditions but also, by heating or covering,
' maintain the temperature of the concrete between 40 degrees F. and 90 degrees
F. for entire curing period.
2. In hot weather take immediate steps to protect newly finished concrete from the
drying effects of wind and sun.
' 3. Maintain temperature of the concrete uniform within 5 degrees F. in any one hour
or 50 degrees F. in any 24 hours period.
4. Protection From Mechanical Injury During curing period, protect concrete from
' mechanical damage, loading, shock and vibration.
5. The Contractor will not be allowed to use calcium chloride in the concrete.
6. Water shall not be allowed to rise over the concrete until it has cured for at least
24 hours. No flowing water shall be permitted in contact with the concrete until it
' has cured for at least seven days.
3.10 CONCRETE TESTS
' A. Contractor shall pay for the following tests to be made by an independent testing
laboratory acceptable to the Owner's Representative. Laboratory shall take, prepare and
cure samples, do all field and laboratory testing and shall promptly submit 5 copies of test
' reports to the Engineer. Testing shall comply with ASTM C94.
SPORTSMAN'S WAREHOUSE 02626- 5
