GeoDesign noted that the exposed foundation subgrade consisted of a brown-gray silty
SAND with gravel which could generally be probed less than 1 inch using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. Along the north
perimeter footing area, GeoDesign noted an approximately 40 feet long section which could be probed 6 inches to 1 foot
which we recommended be removed down to firm and unyielding material and backfilled with a 2-4 inch recycled concrete
material compacted into a firm and unyielding mass.
Relative compaction of the footing subgrade material was tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density gauge; in-place density
tests indicated that exposed foundation subgrade material had been compacted to greater than 95%of its maximum dry
density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
While on-site, GeoDesign observed the foundation excavation subcontractor removed the loose material along the north
perimeter footing area using a CASE CX160B and grade blade. GeoDesign noted that the exposed material approximately
6 inches below footing subgrade consisted of 2-4 inch quarry spalls mixed with a gray sand material; GeoDesign notified
the subcontractor that the surficially loose and saturated material above the spalls should be removed and replaced, but
that the spalls could be compacted and remain in place.
After removing the loose and saturated material, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor backfilled
the over-excavated area with 2-4 inch recycled concrete material compacted into a firm and unyielding mass.
It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the foundation subgrade area observed today is currently suitable for support of the
intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated material be removed from the base of
the footing areas prior to the placement of concrete.
A summary of our observations and density tests taken today can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Nuclear Density
Gauge Data.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not Include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents.
