GeoDesign noted that the exposed foundation subgrade generally consisted of a gray-brown
silty SAND (f-m)with gravel. For the east 1/3 and west 1/3 of the foundation area, penetration depths using a 1/2 inch
diameter soil probe were less than 2 inches. For the center 1/3, GeoDesign identified exposed foundation subgrade soils
which could be probed 1 to 1-1/2 feet;this area was marked with orange spray paint. GeoDesign recommended that the
area be over-excavated down to firm and unyielding soils, geotextile placed across the excavation, and backfiled with
structural fill material.
While on-site, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor used an excavator and grade blade to remove
the previously mentioned loose soil from the center 1/3 of Lot 139. Material exposed at the base of the over-excavated
area consisted of a gray silty SAND with gravel which could be probed less than 2 inches.
Relative compaction of the exposed subgrade soils and over-excavated areas were tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density
gauge. In-place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95%of its maximum dry
density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
GeoDesign notified the foundation excavation subcontractor and client that the over-excavated area was suitable for
placement of the geotextile material and structural fill. It is GeoDesign's understanding that the contractor will backfill the
over-excavated area with a clean 2-inch railroad ballast material compacted into a firm and unyielding mass.
A summary of our observations can be found in the attached Figure 1, Nuclear Density Gauge Data, and Photo Log. John
Feltner with Polygon was notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of actw ties wating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to complywith the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supe visior or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observatlons, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
Onal upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 1 Seattle,WA 98133 1 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 1 253.203.0095
,f
