Geotechnical Report
Proposed Student Housing: 931 Broadway Street, Everett, Washington
December 8, 2015
Wall backfill should be properly moisture conditined, placed in loose, horizontal lifts
less than 8 to 12 inches in thickness, and systematically compacted to a dense and
relatively unyielding condition and to at least 95 pf;rcent of the maximum dry density, as
determined using test method ASTM D-1557. VIithin 5 feet of the wall, the backfill
should be compacted with hand-operated equipment to at least 90 percent of the
maximum dry density.
4.5 PERMANENT CUT AND FILL SLOPES
Based on the anticipated soil that will be expsed in the planned excavation, we
. recominend permanent cut and fill slopes be constructed no steeper than 2H:1 V
(Horizontal:Vertical).
5.0 TEMPORARY EXCAVATIONS
Temporary excavations should be constructed i 1 accordance with Part N of WAC
(Washington Administrative Code) 296-155. The contractor is responsible far
maintaining safe excavation slopes and/or shoring.
We anticipate the excavation will encounter 2 to 5 feet of fill over glacial till. Based on
these conditions the building excavation can be accomplished as an open cut with a
1 H:1 V within the fill, and '/zH:l V within the glacial till.
An L-shaped footing may be used to conserve spac for temporary excavations.
Temporary excavations should be evaluated in tle field during construction based on
actual observed soil conditions. If seepage is enccuntered, excavation slope inclinations
- may need to be reduced. During wet weather, the cut slopes may need to be flattened to
reduce potential erosion or should be covered with plastic sheeting.
If there is not sufficient room to maintain the excaation within the limits of the property,
temporary easements may be needed to slope the e:ccavation into the adjoining properties.
If easements cannot be obtained, then temporary shoring may be needed.
I 5-275 931 Broadway,Evcrctt Page PariCiEO, 11C.
