' determinations are shown on the appropriate boring logs in Appendix A and in the plasticity
charts shown in Figures B-2.
1 5.0 SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The geology and subsurface conditions beneath the north end of the wharf were inferred from
visual classification of soil samples obtained from the current geotechnical boring and historic
exploration data from previous projects in the vicinity provided by MN and the Port. The
following sections include a description of the general geology, geologic units, and the
subsurface soil and groundwater conditions encountered in the project area and assumed to exist
for purposes of performing engineering evaluations and providing design recommendations.
5.1 Existing Geotechnical Data
' The Port and MN provided reports of previously performed geotechnical explorations at the
project site, including:
' Report of Geotechnical Investigation, South Terminal Project,Everett,Washington
(Dames &Moore, 1991)
■ As-built Drawings,Weyerhaeuser Company—Cargo Dock&Warehouse, Port of
Everett,Washington(Weyerhaeuser Company, 1978)
The above-referenced reports included geologic reconnaissance and subsurface explorations of
the project site.
Numerous geotechnical explorations have been performed near the wharf The closest borings
were completed for the Weyerhaeuser Company for the initial construction of the wharf and are
documented in as-built drawings of the wharf. Specifically, borings 1 and 2 were considered
when evaluating the subsurface conditions beneath the project site. Additional borings have
been completed to the north and east of the project site and were considered in our interpretation
of the subsurface conditions. It should be noted that these borings were completed for a variety
of purposes that did not include the installation of piles; therefore, in some cases the information
presented in the borings was not sufficient for pile design at the current project site.
5.2 Regional Geologic Setting
The project is located in the central portion of the Puget Lowland, an elongated,north-south
depression situated between the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range. Geologists
generally agree that the Puget Sound area was subjected to six or more major glacial events. The
21-1-21962-003-R2.doex/wp/cp 21-1-21962-003
5
r
