I <br /> SECTION 31 23 16-EXCAVATION <br /> IPART 1 GENERAL <br /> 1.1 SUMMARY <br /> IA.This Section includes excavation required for building foundations, site structures,or under slabs- <br /> I on-grade or paving. Excavating for utilities outside building is included in Section 31 23 17, <br /> Trenching. B. Section Includes: <br /> I 1. Excavating for building foundations. <br /> 2. Excavating for paving,roads, and parking areas. <br /> I 3. Excavating for slabs-on-grade. <br /> 4. Excavating for site structures. <br /> 5. Excavating for landscaping. <br /> I1.2 DEFINITIONS <br /> I A. Common Excavation: All excavation required for Work, regardless of the type, character, <br /> composition or condition of the material encountered. Common Excavation <br /> 4 shall further include all debris, junk, broken concrete, and all other material. All excavation <br /> shall be classified as Common Excavation, unless provided as Rock for under Section 31 23 <br /> 18, Rock Removal below. <br /> Material: All soils, aggregate, broken concrete,Commondebris, junk, and miscellaneous <br /> I material encountered in Common Excavation, excluding rock as defined below. <br /> 1 <br /> C. Concrete Excavation: The removal of pieces of concrete larger than 1 cubic yard in vo ume <br /> that requires drilling,splitting and breaking methods,or a necessitating a trench width increase <br /> Iof 18 inches or more than the width of the preceding 10 feet of trench. Concrete excavation <br /> includes materials composed of Portland cement that are not identified other than manholes, <br /> Istructures, sewer pipe, or other appurtenances. <br /> D. Exploratory Excavation: The removal and replacement of material from locations shown on <br /> the Drawings, or as directed for the purpose of investigating underground conditions and <br /> identifying potential utility conflict between existing and proposed utilities. <br /> I E. Overbreak: Material beyond and outside of the slope limits established by the Owner's <br /> Representative,which becomes displaced or loosened during excavation and is excavated. <br /> F.
