Today, relative compaction of the exposed soil was tested using a Troxler
Moisture-Density gauge; in-place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95%of its
maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
GeoDesign recommended that the over-excavated area be lined with a non-woven geotextile material and backfilled with
structural fill material. GeoDesign noted that DDS began importing 2-inch railroad ballast for use as structural fill for Lot 225
today.
Craig with DDS stated that the over-excavated areas would be lined with non-woven geotextile and backfilled with a
crushed rock material starting tomorrow. GeoDesign notified the contractor that the over-excavated areas were currently
suitable to place backfill material.
Lot 238:
Previously, GeoDesign noted areas along the west, south, and east sides of Lot 238 which could be probed 6 inches to 1.5
feet using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS had over-excavated Lot 238 down to a
gray-brown to gray silty SAND with gravel which could generally be probed less than 2 inches. Over-excavation depths
ranged from 4 inches to 1.5 feet. Relative compaction of the foundation subgrade was tested using a Troxler
Moisture-Density gauge; in-place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95% of its
maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
GeoDesign notified the contractor that the lot area was currently suitable for the placement of backfill material. Craig with
DDS stated that the over-excavated areas would be backfilled with a crushed rock or recycled concrete material at a later
date.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
A summary of our observations and density tests can be found in the attached Figure 1, Nuclear Density Gauge Data, and
Photo Log.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services,We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not indude supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm Is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations,The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
