GeoDesign
noted that the exposed foundation subgrade consisted of a gray, brown, and gray -brown silty SAND (f-m) with gravel (f-c)
and a brown SILT with sand. Penetration depths using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe ranged from 1 to 2.5 feet. GeoDesign
recommended that the lot area be over -excavated down to firm and unyielding material or down 2 feet and brought back to
grade with structural fill. If crushed rock material is used, a non -woven geotextile material should be placed across the
subgrade area prior to backfilling.
Craig with DDS stated that the lot area would be over -excavated and backfilled later this week. Eddy Stevens suggested
that they may over -excavate the lot area and backfill with cement -treated material. If the client elects to cement -treat the
on -site material, GeoDesign recommends treating the silty SAND material at a rate of approximately 4-5% by dry weight of
the soil (assume 120 Ibs of dry weight per cubic foot). Higher levels of treatment would be required for treating the exposed
brown SILT material.
Lot 238:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that DDS over -excavated unsuitable areas for Lot 238. Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS
had backfilled the over -excavated area with a 2-inch clean crushed material tamped into a firm and unyielding mass using
the bucket of an excavator. It is the opinion of'GeoDesign that the exposed foundation area for Lot 238 observed today is
currently suitable. for support of the intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated
material be removed from the base of the footing area prior to the placement of concrete.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
A summary of our observations and density tests can be found in the attached Figure 1.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager, as indicated by initials in the "Reviewed W section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North, Suite 402 1 Seattle, WA 98133 1 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma, WA 98402 1 253.203.0095
