Column thickness has been increased to 5/8"to meet
compactness requirement for 8x8 HSS.
Item 18.
AISC 341-10, Section F2.6c,Required Strength of Bracing Connections, indicates that the required
tension strength of brace connections is the lesser of the expected yield strength in tension of the brace
or the maximum load effect that can be transferred to the brace by the system.
The building code(IBC,ASCE 7-10)does not require the foundation, the braced frame footings in the
current project,to be designed to resist uplift forces greater than those generated by the code base shear.
Based on the equivalent lateral force analysis used for the project and the braced frame analysis, the
calculated uplift force is approximately 139.1k. To resist this uplift, the foundation design shows(3)
micropiles at each braced frame footing with each micropile providing an uplift capacity of 50k.
Considering pile capacity allowable increases for short term seismic loads and the dead load of the
concrete pile cap,the calculated uplift capacity of the braced frame footing is approximately 205k. The
capacity to demand ratio,or effective overstrength, for the frame foundation is 205/139.1=1.47.
Applying the effective overstrength factor to the braced frame connection force at the lowest level
yields a connection force of 118.6k.
