City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1 through December 31, 2018
ChildStrive
Shelter Program
EXHIBIT A: Program Summary
ChildStrive's Shelter Program aligns to the City of Everett's Human Needs priority for Youth in
both health services(screening children for developmental delays including motor skills, speech
delays,and/or feeding issues)and also in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
• Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
• Improve parenting practices
• Prevent child abuse and neglect
• Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development
• Increase children's school readiness and success
ChildStrive provides parenting support and play groups in family shelters in Everett and Snohomish
County.A certified Early Childhood Educator employed by ChildStrive provides regular visits to family
shelters. Visit frequency is dictated by the number of preschoolers residing at the shelter at the time.
Services include screening of all preschoolers to identify if they are falling behind their peers in
development and referring for intervention if there is a need; providing play groups for preschoolers and
their parents to help parents know what are developmentally appropriate services;providing groups for
parents to help them learn skills to support their young children's development during this difficult time
for the family; and providing individual meetings with parents and children to support them with
parenting, development and resource needs. In addition,we provide consultation and training to staff at
shelters and at Tomorrow's Hope Childcare Center to support their ability to meet the needs of very
young children.
The targeted population for ChildStrive's Shelter program is families experiencing homelessness who are
pregnant or have children ages birth to 5 years.
Services are provided during the day at homeless shelters and at Tomorrow's Hope childcare center.
ChildStrive staff visit facilities as needed determined by the number of families with children ages birth to
five years living in the shelter. The needs of these families determines what type of services are provided
including parenting groups, play groups or individual sessions. The ChildStrive Early Childhood
Educator visits Tomorrow's Hope every week to support staff working with children and families dealing
with homelessness. The ChildStrive staff member is also available to meet with shelter service providers
for the same purpose.
A dedicated ChildStrive Early Childhood Educator provides support to families living in shelters and to
the staff at Tomorrow's Hope Childcare. Other ChildStrive staff including counselors, educators, physical
or occupational therapists and/or speech language pathologists can also be accessed to provide services if
deemed necessary.
