GPNPP-06-0309
192 gallons (16— 12 gallon containers) of paint(Class 1B Flammable Liquid).
The spraying of solvent on the airplane for cleaning is not performed
simultaneously with the painting operation. The solvent and paint containers are
identical and are ASME certified pressure tanks. The LEL testing performed
above shows that the spray operation within the hangar does not create a
hazardous level of vapors under any condition with the ventilation system in
proper operation.
BOE//VG
The maximum allowable quantity per control area of hazardous materials by code
in a building with an automatic sprinkler system is 240 gallons of storage and 60
gallons used in an open system (total of use and storage is 240 gallons). Because
this facility does not exceed the maximum allowable quantity of hazardous
materials we interpret the closest occupancy classification as Group S-1 Aircraft
Repair Hangar.
Smoke Vents/Draft Curtains
Section 910.2.1 of the 2003 IBC does not require smoke vents for a Group S-1
Aircraft Repair Hangar. Since smoke and heat vents are not required the draft
curtains serve no purpose and therefore are not required. This scenario was
accepted by the City of Everett for the High Bay Factory 777 Expansion as well
as the 45-01 and 45-04 Paint Hangars.
Summary Request
Please acknowledge acceptance of our request by providing a letter stating
acceptance of the recommended reduction to the Class 1, Division 2 areas within
all three Everett paint hangars, assigning an Occupancy Classification of S-1, and
deleting the requirements for smoke and heat vents and draft curtains in the 45-03
Paint Hangar.
The Boeing Company values our continued successful working relationship with
the City of Everett. Should you have any questions or concerns or require
additional information, please feel free to contact me.
Sincer ,
Dirk H. Fieldcamp Jr.
Civic Affairs Manager
THE BOEING COMPANY
(425)342-5343
