City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1 through December 31, 2018
Camp Fire Snohomish County
Mega Club
EXHIBIT A: Program Summary
Our Healthy Initiatives curricula include several programs for after-school activities designed to help youth learn to
value themselves, make good choices and develop strategies for positive, long term healthy lifestyles. Mega Club
provides after school programming for children ages 5-14 years old, which includes education on nutrition
balanced with healthy activities; mentoring by trained adults;guidance on accepting responsibility, self-worth and
leadership;and development of strategies for making good choices. Making good choices and having a ready
excuse to avoid negative behavior helps youth stay out of trouble as they develop healthy habits. Positive social
interactions reinforce good choices. Prevention in this high risk group is important and far less expensive than
rehabilitative solutions. An "I Can Do It Robotics" program was introduced in 2017 to provide STEM activities
designed to bring an increased level of interactive education to this population.
To create healthy lifestyles, youth must first learn to value themselves and view themselves as successful in
positive areas of their lives such as at home and in school. Poverty and the circumstances of homelessness have a
negztive impact on children who may also have suffered from Adverse Childhood Experiences and have developed
low self esteem. Objectives will include learning to trust and developing an open mindset. Each activity has an
embeded objective directed to helping youth value themselves and get beyond their circumstances.
Camp Fire Snohomish County's Mega Club is an afterschool and summer program at three Everett sites designated
as low income housing centers by the Everett Housing Authority and one site at the Domestic Violence Center.
The priority is VIOLENCE/DELINQUENCY PREVENTION with the objective being to prevent violence, crime and
unhealthy behaviors in children and youth and help them develop long term good choices for healthy lifestyles.
Self-Reliance courses are integrated into the curriculum and will empower youth to build skills that will help them
become self-sufficient,strengthening and enhancing the quality of life of their whole family. The basic curriculum
we use in these programs is "Step It Up 2 Thrive," an outgrowth from the Search Institute's Developmental Asset
model with the goal of helping children progress from "Surviving" (10 or fewer developmental assets)to "Thriving"
(30 or more developmental assets.) We will utilize this Thrive curriculum which is a four step process:
•Identifying Sparks(Develop Passions&Skills that are Meaningful and Motivating, Dr. Peter Benson,Search
Institute)
•Adopting a Growth Mindset(Dr. Carol Dweck, Stanford University)
•Reflecting on Thriving Indicators(Search Institute and Thrive Foundation)
•Building Goal Management Skills(Tuft Institute) utilizing GPS(Goal Selection, Pursuit of Strategies,Shifting Gears
in the face of challenges.)
Children learn to develop a resiliency for facing challenges, adopt their own goals(more likely to achieve), reflect
on them as they move forward and adjust as needed. They'll take into account their own skills, talents and
interests while making the choices of foods to eat, making commitments for health and safety, avoiding drugs,
gangs, alcohol &tobacco, and staying in school. With good mentoring and follow-through,they will find success in
school and in life.
