Design for Public Spaces <br /> A variety of uses and amenities for public open spaces should be explored to maximize interest and functionality. These spaces <br /> can be substantial-sized plots, such as the plaza on the Snohomish County complex, or smaller innovative parklets that can <br /> provide unique and temporary urban experiences. <br /> Street and sidewalk design is shaped by the relationships of land use, buildings, parking areas, landscaping and public furnishings. <br /> Streets designed for pedestrian use contribute to Metro Everett's public image and energy by encouraging pedestrian circulation <br /> and activities, and by integrating the area's various attractions. <br /> UD-I 5: New public open spaces should be located adjacent to sidewalks and alleys in larger redevelopments to help <br /> soften the built environment, and to encourage public interest and activity. <br /> UD-16: Public or publically accessible open spaces should be encouraged at the tops of tall buildings to capitalize on <br /> views of both the natural and built environments. <br /> UD-1 7: The first floor of buildings should be designed with the pedestrian in mind. Street type designations set forth in <br /> Chapter Four, Land Use (Figure 23) will be used to identify sidewalk widths, landscape treatments, and other improvements <br /> to encourage public usage. <br /> UD-1 8: Design standards for buildings should integrate components that offer protection to pedestrians, such as awnings <br /> and canopies, as a means to encourage pedestrian activity along the street. These components are expected to project into <br /> the public right-of-way. Consider solar access in street awning design. <br /> UD-I 9: Adopt sidewalk standards for width based on their designated street type. Wider sidewalks should be along <br /> pedestrian streets, mixed use corridors and transit-oriented corridors. Sidewalk standards should also consider tree health <br /> and growth. <br /> UD-20: All new sidewalk pavement should be constructed similarly, unless special paving is recommended, and embedded <br /> street names should be incorporated in all reconstructed sidewalks at intersections. In historic districts, new sidewalks <br /> should be colored to visually blend with older sidewalks in the area, and should have similar scoring patterns. <br /> UD-2 I: A street tree and landscaping plan should be adopted for Metro Everett. Certain streets, such as the gateway <br /> corridors, should have a more formal design approach with long-lived stately trees, while smaller local streets could be more <br /> Chapter 8,Urban Design 11 August 29,2018 <br />
