• <br /> • <br /> 1 Section 2320 - Existing Venting Systems <br /> 2 (a) An existing venting system shall not be connected to a <br /> replaced water heater unless the venting system complies <br /> 3 with all the following requirements: <br /> 4 1. The venting system shall have been lawfully installed <br /> in compliance with the Code in effect at the time of <br /> 5 its installation and shall be in a safe condition. <br /> 6 2. The internal area of the venting system shall comply <br /> with Section 2318. <br /> 7 <br /> 3. The venting system shall be connected to the water <br /> 8 heater in a safe manner. <br /> 9 Section 2321 - Draft Hoods <br /> 10 Every water heater draft hood shall be located in the same room or space <br /> as the combustion air opening of the water heater. <br /> 11 <br /> Every draft hood shall be installed in the position for which it was <br /> 12 designed and shall be located so that the draft hood relief opening is not <br /> less than six inches (6") from any surface other than the water heater it <br /> 13 serves, measured in a direction 90 degrees to the plane of the relief <br /> opening. When a greater clearance is indicated by the water heater <br /> 14 approval, as shown on the water heater label, this greater clearance shall <br /> be provided. <br /> 15 <br /> Section 2322 - Existing Masonry Chimneys <br /> 16 <br /> (a) Gas venting into Existing Masonry Chimneys. Existing lined <br /> 17 masonry chimneys and unlined chimneys with not more than <br /> one side exposed to the outside may be used to vent gas <br /> 18 water heaters provided: <br /> 19 1. Approved liner shall be installed in an existing unlined <br /> masonry chimney when deemed necessary by the <br /> 20 Building Official considering local problems of vent <br /> gas condensate. <br /> 21 <br /> 2. The effective cross-sectional area is not more than <br /> 22 four times the cross-sectional area of the vent and <br /> chimney connectors entering the chimney. <br /> 23 <br /> 3. The effective area of the chimney when connected to <br /> 24 more than one appliance shall be not less than the <br /> area of the largest vent or chimney connector plus 50 <br /> 25 per cent of the area of the additional vent or chimney <br /> connectors. <br /> 26 4. Automatically controlled gas water heaters <br /> 27 connected to a chimney which also serves equipment <br /> burning solid or liquid fuel shall be equipped with an <br /> 28 automatic pilot. A gas water heater vent connector <br /> and a chimney connector from an appliance burning <br /> 29 another fuel may be connected into the same chimney <br /> through separate openings providing the gas water <br /> 30 heater is vented above the other fuel burning <br /> appliance or both may be connected through a single <br /> 31 opening if joined by a suitable fitting located at the <br /> 32 <br /> - 23 - <br />
