The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross connection regula[ions require water
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinking water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
pro[ection water in both commercial and residential spiinkler sysfems does not backflow into the public
system. In the past, single check valves were considered as an adequate back(low device (or commercial
properties. However, DOH has determined that double check detector assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptaBle backflow protection devce for commercial fire protection systems. Some
commeraal buildings in Everett still have single cneck-valves installed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commerciai fire services when new construction is planned that will affed fire services. lhis
addi:ional protedion is nccessary to adhere to DOH regulatiuns and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincerely,
 hh.-.r-'-
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assisfant Fire Marshal Jim Venturo, Utilities Records hlanager
Verl Sly, Pteg Haley

CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8682
