Meg Haley
From: Meg Haley
Senf: Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:02 PM
To: 'Karen Halverson'
Subject: RE: 3231 Lombard
Hi Karen,
I will hold onto the revisions as we discussed today until your contractor can come in
with further information about the grade drops adjacent to the new ramp and stair, and the
design of the handrail and guard(at minimum, where required by code) . As reference for
these comments, per previous revisions to the drawings, a guard is required at 42 inches
high where stairway, ramp or landing is greater than 30 inches above the adjacent grade,
per IEC Sections 1013 .1 and 1013 .2. A £our inch diameter sphere should not pass through
any opening in the guard up to a height of 34 inches, per IBC Section 1013.3. Between 31
and 42 inches, an eight inch sphere should not pass through any opening in the guard, pe;:
ZBC Section 1013.3.
In addition to the guard, a handrail meeting the requirements for accessibility for both
the ramps and stairs is required to be continuous, uniform in p•ofile per the ICC/ANSI
A117.1 Section and IBC Sections 1012.3 and 1012 .4 .
Handrails are also required to extend horizontally at lest 12 inches beyond the top riser-
and continue to sl.ope for the depth of one tread beyond the bottom riser, per IBC Section
1012 .5 For ramps, the handrail are required to extend horizontally above the landing 12
inches minimum beyond the top and bottom ramps, per IBC Section 1012.5.
Additionally, clear space betaeen a handrail and a wall or other surface should be a
minimum of 1 .5 inches, per IBC 1012.6. I can have a handout of these code sections
available for your contractor to pick up in will-call at our front counter. Could I qet
his full name again so I can label the will-call documents? Of course, when he comer to
the counter, either Steve Miller or myself can review the code sections over the counter
if he ha any questions.
-Meg
-—--Original.
