PROPOSED LIBERTY HALL,EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE _ Everett,Washington
ranging from 6,000 pounds per square foot (psf). Footings bearing on structural fill may, be
designed using an allowable soil bearing value ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 pounds per square
foot (psf) depending on the location and depth of overexcavation as described in Table 3 and as
shown in Figure 3. The allowable bearing value may be increased to 6,000 psf if drilled aggregate
piers are used. The allowable bearing value may be increased by one-third for short duration loads
such as wind or seismic events.
Lateral foundation loads may be resisted by passive resistance on thesides of the footings and by
friction on the base of the footings. For footings supported and surrounded by either medium
dense to dense glacially consolidated soil or compacted structural fill,a coefficient of friction of 0.4
and a passive resistance of 350 pounds per cubic foot(pcf) may be used.
Perimeter footing drains should be included in the design of the building.
Foundation Design (Deep Foundations)
Deep foundations consisting of 4-inch or 6-inch diameter steel pipe piles may be used to support
the building. Steel pipe piles should be driven to achieve an allowable capacity of 20 kips or
30 kips for 4-inch and 6-inch diameter piles, respectively.
Floor Slabs
A subgrade modulus of 50 pounds per cubic inch (pci) may be used for design of the
slabs-on-grade at the site. Concrete slabs-on-grade should be supported on a 6-inch-thick capillary
break layer overlain by a vapor retarder. At least 12 inches of imported gravel borrow should be
placed and compacted below the capillary break layer. A suitable vapor barrier should be installed
below the floor slabs.
Below-Grade Walls
Below-grade walls should be provided with a free draining drainage layer and footing drain pipes.
For below-grade walls constructed either neat against the dense native soils, or backfilled with
compacted structural fill,we recommend the following equivalent fluid weights:
a allowable passive - 350 pcf
® active 35 pcf
® at rest- 55 pcf.
New HMA Pavements
New hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement sections around the building should consist of at least
3 inches HMA over 4 inches of base course in car parking areas and 4 inches HMA over 6 inches of
base course in areas exposed to truck traffic or heavy traffic volumes. A subbase layer consisting
of at least 12 inches of imported gravel borrow placed over a geotextile separator should be
planned in all new parking areas due to the soft subgrade soils at the site. The asphalt section
may also be increased in order to reduce the subbase thickness.
Page ES-2 June 10,2010 GeoEngineers,Inc.
File No.5836.010-00
