The exposed foundation subgrade consisted of a gray-brown silty SAND(f-m)with gravel (f-c). For
the west 2/3rd's of the foundation area, the exposed foundation subgrade could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2
Inch diameter soil probe. Relative compaction of the exposed foundation subgrade was tested using a Troxler
Moisture-Density Gauge; in-place density tests indicated that the exposed soil had been compacted to greater than 95%of
its maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
For the east 1/3 of the foundation area, the exposed foundation subgrade material could be probed 1-3 feet using a 1/2 inch
diameter soil probe;the area was clearly delineated and marked with orange spray paint. GeoDesign recommends that the
loose material be removed down to firm and unyielding material and backfilled with railroad ballast material(2-inch clean
crushed rock). The contractor intends on over-excavating the identified area tomorrow.
Generally, the footing and crawl space area was covered with approximately 1-2 inches of surficially loose and saturated
material which should be removed prior to placement of concrete.
LOT 277:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that the south half of Lot 277 was covered in 1-2 inches of surficially loose and saturated
material which we recommended be removed prior to the placement of concrete. Today,we noted the loose material had
been removed from the south side of the lot area; the east half was covered with a railroad ballast material tamped into a
firm and unyielding mass.
It Is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation subgrade material for Lot 277 is currently suitable for support of
the Intended structure. We recommend that any loose and saturated material that may build up under the footing areas be
removed prior to the placement of concrete.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not Include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by Initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
