Today, GeoDesign noted that BDZ had
completed filling the lot area to near plan bottom of footing using the previously mentioned cement treated material.
GeoDesign noted that the exposed fill material could generally be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil
probe shortly after compaction; penetration depths encountered at the end of the day were generally less than 1 inch.
It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation subgrade for Lot 252 is currently suitable for support of the
intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated material be removed from the base of
the footing area prior to the placement of concrete.
LOT 251:
Today, GeoDesign noted that BDZ had completed excavation of Lot 251 down to firm and unyielding material using a
Komatsu PC300. GeoDesign noted that the lot area required 2-3 feet of over-excavation across the entire lot area to
expose a gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe;
overall grades across the lot required 3-5 feet of fill to reach the plan bottom of footing.
After observing the base of the over-excavated area, GeoDesign notified the contractor that the over-excavated area was
suitable for placement of backfill material. GeoDesign noted that BDZ backfilled the over-excavated area with a
cement-treated gray-brow silty SAND (f-m)with gravel (f-c)which was previously above its optimum moisture content.
GeoDesign noted that the cement dust was added to stockpiles of material outside the foundation area and thoroughly
mixed using the bucket of an excavator. GeoDesign noted that the material was mixed, placed, and spread in
approximately 12-18 inch loose lifts using a Komatsu PC300 excavator and compacted into a firm and unyielding mass
using a Hamm 3410 smooth-drum vibratory roller. Penetration depths encountered shortly after compaction for the first lift
was less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. The lot area was not completely backfilled prior to our
departure from the site today.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative.
