Previously, GeoDesign noted that the exposed foundation subgrade
for the east half of Lots 162 and 163 consisted of a dark brown sandy SILT with trace to minor organics and debris which
could be probed 1 to 2.5 feet;GeoDesign recommended that up to 2 feet of material be over-excavated to expose
underlying firm and unyielding material. Today, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor had
removed approximately 2 feet of material for the previously identified area for Lot 162. GeoDesign noted that the exposed
subgrade material consisted of a dark brown sandy SILT with trace to minor organic and debris which could be penetrated
1 to 3 feet using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. GeoDesign recommended that the base of the foundation excavation be
lined with a nonwoven filter fabric and backfilled with 2-inch clean crushed railroad ballast compacted into a firm and
unyielding mass.
GeoDesign also noted that the foundation subcontractor was in the process of removing 2 feet of material from the
previously identified area for Lot 163. The material exposed of the base of the excavation consisted of similar material to
that encountered for Lot 162.
For both Lots 162 and 163, GeoDesign noted that the exposed subgrade material for over-excavated areas on the west
side of the lots consisted of a brown-gray silty SAND with gravel which could be penetrated less than 2 inches using a 1/2
inch diameter soil probe. It is GeoDesign's understanding that these over-excavated areas will be backfilled with 2-inch
clean crushed railroad ballast material.
A summary of our observations can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Photo Log. The client and the contractor were
notified of our observations and recommendations prior to our departure from the site today.
•
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents:Our firm Is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations,The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as Indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
