SUMMARY of OBSERVATIONS: LOT 244: Previously GeoDesign noted that BDZ had over-excavated the Lot 244 area approximately 1.5 to 5 feet down to firm and unyielding material and partially backfilled the area with a cement-treated material. Today, GeoDesign noted that the contractor had completed backfilling the over-excavated area to near plan bottom of footing. GeoDesign noted that the material had been mixed and spread using a Komatsu PC 300 excavator and compacted into a firm and unyielding mass using a smooth-drum vibratory roller. Penetration depths encountered for the material placed today was approximately 2-4 inches shortly after compaction. Material placed on the east side of the lot area yesterday could be probed less than 2 inches today. It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation subgrade material observed today is currently suitable for support of the intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any loose and saturated material be removed from the base of the footings prior to placement of concrete. LOT 245: Today, GeoDesign noted that BDZ completed excavation of Lot 245 down to firm and unyielding material, which required 4-5 feet of over-excavation, using a Komatsu PC300 excavator. GeoDesign noted that the exposed base of the over-excavated area generally consisted of a gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. After observing the base of the over-excavated area, GeoDesign notified Leroy with BDZ that the over-excavated lot area was currently suitable for placement of backfill material. GeoDesign noted that BDZ backfilled the over-excavated area with a cement-treated gray-brown silty SAND (f-m)with gravel (f-c)which was previously above its optimum moisture content. GeoDesign noted that the cement dust was added to stockpiles of material outside the foundation area and thoroughly mixed using the bucket of an excavator. GeoDesign noted that the material was mixed, placed, and spread in approximately 18 inch loose lifts using a Komatsu PC300 excavator and compacted into a firm and unyielding mass using an excavator-mounted hoepack. Penetration depths encountered shortly after compaction were generally 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. The lot area was not completely backfilled prior to our departure from the site today. This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services.We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative.
