GeoDesign was not on-site to observe the base of the over-excavated area prior to the <br /> placement of backfill material. According to the contractor and based on pictures provided by Doug Ross with Polygon, it <br /> appears that the lot area was over-excavated 3-4 feet down to a gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which exhibited <br /> significant resistance to digging with the excavator bucket. Over-excavation depths for the lot appeared to be consistent <br /> with previous probing depths encountered in the area.After being described the conditions encountered, GeoDesign <br /> notified the contractor that the over-excavated area could be backfilled. It is our understanding that BDZ cement-treated the <br /> material removed from the lot area using the bucket of the excavator.According to the contractor,the treated material was <br /> placed and spread using the excavator and compacted into a firm and unyielding mass using a smooth-drum vibratory <br /> roller. <br /> During our afternoon site visit, GeoDesign noted that BDZ had placed approximately 2 feet of material across the lot area, <br /> The exposed backfill material consisted of a cement-treated gray to gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which could be <br /> probed generally less than 2 inches using 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. Overall grades across the lot were generally 2 feet <br /> below plan bottom of footing. <br /> This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services.We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and <br /> specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative.Our work does not Include supervision or direction of the contractor,the contractor's employees <br /> or agents.
