LONGITUDE
ONE TWENTY°
ENGINEERING&DESIGN
CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT SERVICES
Date: 29th day of March, 2018
Project Name: Layton Residence Remodel Project Number: S180329
Project Location: 1101 E Marine View Drive, Everett, WA 98201
Client's Name: The Layton's
Client's Address: 1101 E Marine View Drive, Everett, WA 98201
To whom it may concern,
We were informed of a condition where the floor joists above the basement at the residence had been notched at
the support, reducing the depth of the solid sawn members over the support by approximately 2"as we were
asked to review the condition to assure that the structural integrity is adequate per the loading demand, design
standards, and per the currently adopted building codes and associated material codes.
• The member size is 2x8 HF#2,joists located at 16"o.c,and seven members have been compromised
at the support.
• We have been informed the flooring products and floor assembly is typical,as we assumed 40 psf LL,
and 12 psf DL for our applied design loads.
• The members experience uniformed loads, and no bearing walls above are loading up the floor.
• The members clear-span<12' (inside-to-inside).
• See attached calculation showing the member properties, and associated strength values pointing to
the conditional demand versus capacity.
Results: Per the attached calculation, the existing seven members are still sufficient with the 2"cut based on the
shear capacity versus demand(governing in the region)and determined based on a linear assessment of the
reduced depth to the total. However,to assure that the notched section does not lead to any cracking
compromising the section past the minimum requirements, we recommend to attach a 1'-6" long 2x6 member
sistered to the side of the cut 2x8 over the support and attach with (3)rows of 0.131x3" nails @ 4",full length, staggered.
Sincerely, • 1,*• d /U
M5ns R.Thurfjell, P.E
r rte;! t. #
L120 Engineering& Design (L120) - ! 3
