CENTRAL UTILITY PLANT PARKING LOT Everett,Washington
APPENDIX A
FIELD EXPLORATIONS
General
Subsurface soil and groundwater conditions were evaluated at the site by excavating nine test pits
(TP-1 through TP-9) at the approximate locations shown in Figure 2. Locations of the explorations
were determined in the field by pacing or measuring from site improvements.
Test Pits
Nine test pits (TP-1 through TP-9) were excavated to depths ranging from 41/2 to 81 feet
below the existing ground surface. The test pits were excavated by Custom Backhoe on
September 17,2012, using a rubber-tired Case 580L backhoe.
The test pits were continuously observed by a geotechnical engineer from our firm who examined
and classified the soils encountered, obtained representative soil samples, observed groundwater
conditions and maintained a detailed log of each test pit. At completion of test pit excavation, the
test pits were backfilled in lifts approximately 2 feet thick and tamped in place with the backhoe
bucket.
Grab samples of representative soil types were typically obtained from the test pits at geologic unit
intervals and transported to our laboratory in Redmond,Washington. The soils encountered during
the excavation of the test pits were visually classified in the field in general accordance with the
Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
D 2488, which is summarized in Figure A-1. Test pit logs are shown in Figures A-2 through A-10.
These logs are based on our interpretation of the field and laboratory data and indicate the various
soils encountered. They also indicate the depths at which the soils or their characteristics change,
although the change may be gradual. The densities noted on the test pit logs are based on
observations and judgment of the conditions encountered during excavation.
GEOENGINEERS October 17,2012 Page A-1
File No.10738-010-00
