The exposed
footing subgrade soil generally consisted of a gray-brown to brown silty SAND with gravel that could be probed less than 2
inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. Relative compaction of the footing subgrade soils was tested using a Troxler
Moisture-Density gauge; in-place density tests indicated that material had been compacted to greater than 95% of its
maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation subgrade observed today is currently suitable for support of the
intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated material that may be generated be
removed from the base of foundation areas prior to the placement of concrete.
Lot 144:
Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS was in the process of excavating the footing and crawl space area for Lot 144. The soil
near the exposed footing subgrade area on the east half of the lot area consisted of gray-brown silty SAND with gravel
which could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. We identified an approximately 25'x25'area
on the west 1/2 of the lot area which consisted of a very loose saturated gray silty SAND with gravel and debris which could
be probed 2.5 to 3.0 feet using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe and exhibited yielding underfoot. GeoDesign notified the
contractor that the identified area was unsuitable for support of the intended structure and would require removal down to
firm and unyielding soil and replacement with structural fill material.
Relative compaction of the footing subgrade soils was tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density gauge; in-place density tests
indicated that material had been compacted to greater than 95% of its maximum dry density as determined by a Modified
Proctor analysis.
It is our understanding that the area on the west half of the lot will be over-excavated and backfilled tomorrow.
A summary of observations and density tests taken can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Nuclear Density Gauge Data.
The contractor was notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site today.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
speafications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095 ( 1
