During
excavation, DDS identified loose saturated soil along the west half of the site that was over-excavated up to 1.5 feet down
to firm and unyielding underlying material. The exposed foundation subgrade across the lot area generally consisted of a
gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which could generally be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe.
GeoDesign noted a vein of material within the over-excavated area approximately 4 feet wide which could be probed 6
inches to 1 foot; GeoDesign recommended placing a non-woven geotextile fabric over this area. GeoDesign observed the
placement of the geotextile fabric prior to departing the site today.
Relative compaction of the exposed foundation subgrade material was tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density Gauge;
in-place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95%of its maximum dry density as
determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
Craig with DDS stated that the over-excavated areas would be backfilled with a crushed rock later today. GeoDesign
notified the contractor that the over-excavated areas were currently suitable to place backfill material.
Lot 235:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that DDS over-excavated unsuitable areas for Lot 235. Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS
had backfilled the over-excavated area with a 2-inch clean crushed material tamped into a firm and unyielding mass using
the bucket of an excavator. It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation area for Lot 235 observed today is
currently suitable for support of the intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated
material be removed from the base of the footing area prior to the placement of concrete.
Lot 239:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that DDS over-excavated unsuitable areas for Lot 239. Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS
had backfilled the over-excavated area with a 2-inch clean crushed material tamped into a firm and unyielding mass using
the bucket of an excavator. It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the exposed foundation area for Lot 239 observed today is
currently suitable for support of the intended structure.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
A summary of our observations can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Nuclear Density Gauge Data.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents.
