The surface of the first lift of backfill <br /> was approximately 5 feet below finish grade. Backfill material consisted of gray silty sand with gravel mixed with cement. <br /> Backfill was placed in 0.5-1 foot lifts and compacted with a large single drum vibratory roller. A 1/2-inch-diameter steel soli <br /> probe and Troxler 3430 Nuclear Density Gauge was used to determine the density of the backfill material.
