Memo to Historical Commission,re:1927 and 2108 Rucker 02/15/19
1927 Rucker Nomination
This nomination was written by Historical Commissioner Jack O'Donnell at the request of the previous
owner of the property. The current owner has written their support for the nomination, a requirement
for this property to be added to the Everett Register.
As noted in the application, this is one of the oldest houses (built in 1893)still standing in Everett and
may be the northernmost. The nomination indicates that the property is "significant because of its style
and appearance." Little is known about the original owners and there are no significant events, persons
or other features of this building that are documented.
The criteria that this property should be considered under is EMC 2.96.050(A)(2):
"Embodies the distinctive architectural characteristics of a type, period, style or method of
design or construction, or represents a significant and distinguishable entity whose components
may lack individual distinction"
The age of this building(1893) makes it one of few remaining homes of this type, period, style or
method of design or construction in Everett. Thus, it is worthy of being added to the Everett Register of
Historic Places.
2108 Rucker Nomination
This nomination was written by the current owner of the property,Gary Nelson dba Rucker II LLC.The
significance of this property is based both on it architectural characteristics and potentially, the
association with the lives of persons significant in local history.
The original home began construction in 1906 and was completed in 1907. It is a significant four-square
home that started out as a single-family residence. In 1952, it was converted to a four-unit apartment,
and in 2017, renovation by the current owner commenced with some additions to the building, resulting
in 6-units in this building. As noted in the nomination, the "details of the wood clad bevel siding show
the craftsmanship of earlier times" and the"grand entry...includes leaded glass windows and
cantilevered window seats...ornate beams and beadboard help add historic details to the font
elevation." The renovation of the building included salvage and reuse of original interior trim and doors,
as well as much of the original Douglas Fir flooring. The structure was rebuilt to current building
standards to avert a potential loss of the building to fire.
The original owners, George and Ida Hilzinger, owned the home until the early forties. Mr. Hilzinger
started Hilzinger Motor Company and was an Everett City Councilman in 1908.
The architectural characteristics of this property, along with the live of a former business person and
council member, make it worthy of being added to the Everett Register of Historic Places.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at dstalheim@everettwa.gov or call 425-257-
8736.
3
