Hilzinger House
2108 Rucker Avenue
The original construction of this historic home was begun in 1906 and completed in 1907 for George and
Ida Hilzinger. Upon its completion, it was a grand structure with modern amenities Including gas ceiling
lights and gas cooking stove.George and Ida had moved from North Dakota and taken up residence in
Everett in 1903.George worked as a carpenter until sometime in 1914 when he took interest in
automobiles and started Hilzinger Motor Company. Mr Hilzinger also became an Everett City
Councilman in 1908. George and Ida owned the home until the early forties.
The home was sold to Joseph Baker in 1944.The Baker family resided in the home until 1947,then sold
to Ralph Lyons. The home remained the Lyons'single-family residence until 1952,then it was converted
to a four-unit apartment building. Ralph Lyons resided in one of the apartments until his passing and his
widow remained in unit#1 until 1976.
The Hilzinger House,as it known today,is one of the most significant four-square style homes remaining
in Everett. In combination with the Wright Mansion next door, it's provides a stunning look back to the
Everett of the 1900's. With the Bay windows and its cut-away porch it typifies the early 1900's,and it
sets a contrast to the Wright House on the next-door lot to the south. The details of the wood clad bevel
siding show the craftsmanship of earlier times. The grand entry at the cut-away porch includes leaded
glass windows and cantilevered window seats. The hipped dormer, center window and detailed soffits
with ornate beams and beadboard help add historic details to the front elevation. Small cutaway decks
on the southwest and northwest corners provide views of Port Gardner Bay and Puget Sound ship
traffic.
The interior is also a classic four-square layout dominated by the large living room and formal dining
room and stairs to the second floor,as well as the roomy kitchen but small dining parlor.Additional
stairs to both the basement and second floors were an additional amenity. The second floor was
comprised of the four turn-of-the-century styled bedrooms.
In 2007 The Hilzinger House was inventoried by the office of Archeology and Historic Preservation and
designated as a property of Historical significance. Mr.Bill Belshaw,an amazing historical
preservationist well known in Everett had purchased the property in 2007 in its vacant state in fear that
it would be torn down. Bill lovingly cared for it while he was renovating the Wright Mansion. We
purchased the property in August 2016 and began working with the planning and Development
department as well as the historical commission to restore the building to its former self and make sure
it would be around for future generations.
We began the renovation process in 2017 by removing all of the original interior trim and doors,as well
as much of the original Douglas Fir flooring that we could salvage and storing them for use in the
finished product. During the renovation, the structure was essentially rebuilt to the current 2015
Uniform Building codes and a fire sprinkler system was incorporated to avert a potential loss of the
building from fire. The newly renovated structure now houses two single family apartment units on
each floor with the main floor units and the second-floor units retaining the look and feel of the original
structure, down to the original doors, trim, and hardware. The grand entry was left intact including the
leaded glass windows and the original entry door.
We appreciate your time in reviewing this for us and helping keep this structure a part of Everett's rich
history.
