lbw
Essential Process Engineering
SUMMARY:
An Engineering analysis has been performed on a Professional Grade Closed Loop Extraction system used in the
extraction of essential oils from a botanical substance by use of a Butane solvent. The Extraction system analyzed
within this report is classified as the Brian Knopf Sib Extractor. This system is composed of an assembly of Food
Grade Piping and pressure vessels. The Closed Loop Extraction system has been analyzed per the American Society
of Mechanical Engineers(ASME)standards B36.19M-2004,B36.10M-2004,ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1-2013,
and guidance from the NFPA-58 LP Gas Code. This report and certificate of conformance shall demonstrate that the
use of the Brian Knopf 5Ib Extractor model shown in figure 4.1 in conjunction with those facility fire protection and
safety features identified as meeting all requirements for this type of system in design and manufacturing. This
report identifies minimum installation requirements of the Processing Lab for safe operation per the International
Building Code(IBC)2012, International Fire Code 2012(IFC), International Mechanical Code 2012(IMC),NFPA 34-
2015, NFPA 54-2015, NFPA 497-2012,and NFPA 70-2014. A code path analysis has been conducted(See page 41).
Brian Knopf Sib Extractor
Allowable Working Pressure=100 Psi
314-55-104 WAC
Marijuana processor license extraction requirements.
(1) Processors are limited to certain methods,equipment,solvents,gases and mediums when creating marijuana
extracts.
(2)Processors may use the hydrocarbons N-butane, !so-butane,propane,or heptane or other solvents or gases
exhibiting low to minimal potential human health-related toxicity approved by the board.These solvents must be of
at least ninety-nine percent purity and a processor must use them in a professional grade closed loop extraction
system designed to recover the solvents,work in an environment with proper ventilation,controlling all sources of
ignition where a flammable atmosphere is or may be present.
(3) Processors may use a professional grade closed loop CO2 gas extraction system where every vessel is rated to
a minimum of nine hundred pounds per square inch.The CO2 must be of at least ninety-nine percent purity.
(4)Professional grade closed loop systems used by processors must be commercially manufactured and built to
codes of recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices,such as:
(a)The American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME);
(b)American National Standards Institute(ANSI);
(c)Underwriters Laboratories(UL);or
(d)The American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM).
5/3/2016 Project:1604141_BrianKnopf_Extractor Page 3 of 34
EPE Doc.160414ER Confidential-Proprietary Document Butane USE ONLY
