August 12, 2004
Interpretation
Proj: Snohomish County Admin. Plaza
Location: 3000 Rockefeller Ave.
Permit: 60408-002
Code: 2000 International 3uilding Code
Subject: Acceptance of alternate design method per Section 104.11
Proposal: The aisle stairs at the propsed amphitheater provide landings tat
are approximately 34" deep (rougiily equivalent to residential landings) in-
between 13" deep treads. Section 1003.3.3.4 (stairvvay landings) excepts aisle
stairs complying with Section 1008. Section 1008 does not specify required
depths for landings.
If treads were created to be of equal length, they would be approximately 20"
deep each:
. This could result in an unusual gait for many users ar_customed tc ii"
treads.
. This would result in a greater trip hazard when iraversing to/from the
stairs and stepped platforms.
. The resultant 20" landings/steps would provide less room for
perpendicular transitions than the 34" landings.
. This interpretation is not without prescient and has been employed in
various projects around the region.
The proposal is therefore acceptable as Section 1008 has no specific
requirements for landing depths and the proposed design is accepted as
equivalent or superior to the prescriptive reuirements for safety.
Tony R. Lee
Plans Examiner
