ARTICLE 12 - BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
When death occurs among members of any employee's immediate family, the employee, upon
request to the Director of Transportation Services, will be granted reasonable and necessary
time off to make arrangements as needed and to attend the funeral and will be compensated at
his/her normal salary for the hours lost from his/her regular schedule before or after the funeral
with a maximum of four (4) days per death for bereavement. Employees may use bereavement
leave in segments of not less than one day at a time. Bereavement Leave must be used within
one year of the death, unless prior arrangements are made with the Director of Transportation
Services. If required to travel beyond the one-way distance of 300 miles to attend services or
an event related to bereavement, (1) one additional day will be allowed. This time off shall not
be deducted from accumulated sick leave or vacation.
Members of an employee's immediate family shall be defined as "spouse, domestic partner,
mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, parents of domestic partner, grandparents,
grandchildren, brother, sister, son, daughter, stepchildren, children of domestic partner,
stepparents".
Effective August 13, 2014, members of an employee's immediate family shall be defined as
"spouse, domestic partner, mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, parents of domestic
partner, grandparents, grandchildren, brother, sister, son, daughter, stepchildren, children of
domestic partner, stepparents, grandparents-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law".
"Domestic Partner" is defined for purposes of this article as the criteria outlined by the City's
Domestic Partner resolution or the State Registry.
