To provide a <br /> 2 rigid mat, the Contractor shall add other supports and tie wires to the top mat as needed. <br /> 3 <br /> 4 Unless noted otherwise, the minimum concrete cover for main reinforcing bars shall be: <br /> 5 <br /> 6 3 inches to a concrete surface deposited against earth without intervening forms. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 21/2 inches to the top surface of a concrete bridge deck or bridge approach slab. <br /> 9 <br /> 10 2 inches to a concrete surface when not specified otherwise in this section or in the <br /> 11 Contract documents. <br /> 12 <br /> 13 11/2 inches to a concrete barrier or curb surface. <br /> 14 <br /> 15 Except for top cover in bridge decks and bridge approach slabs, minimum concrete cover <br /> 16 to ties and stirrups may be reduced by 1/2 inch but shall not be less than 1 inch. Minimum <br /> 17 concrete cover shall also be provided to the outermost part of mechanical splices and <br /> 18 headed steel reinforcing bars. <br /> 19 <br /> 20 Reinforcing steel bar location, concrete cover and clearance shall not vary more than the <br /> 21 following tolerances from what is specified in the Contract documents: <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Reinforcing bar location for members 12 inches or less in thickness: ±0.25 inch <br /> 24 <br /> 25 Reinforcing bar location for members greater than 12 inches in thickness: ±0.375 inch <br /> 26 <br /> 27 Reinforcing bar location for bars placed at equal spacing within a plane: the greater of <br /> 28 either±1 inch or ±1 bar diameter within the plane. The total number of bars shall not <br /> 29 be fewer than that specified. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 The clearance between reinforcement shall not be less than the greater of the bar <br /> 32 diameter or 1 inch for unbundled bars.
