Mr. Keith Ta
Great Sun Corp.
Plan Check Number: M1808-015, First Review
August 10, 2018
2. The proposed hood weighs more than 20 lb and is suspended from the framing above. The
hood shall be provided with lateral bracing per ASCE 7-10 Section 13.6. Alternatively, the
hood may be braced by a direct connection to the adjacent wall provided that the minimum
18-inch clearance is maintained. See IBC Sections 1604.1 and 1613.1.
3. The duct is provided with fire wrap at the interior of the building. The wrap terminates at the
exterior wall. The wrap should continue a minimum of 18 inches outside the exterior wall if
the wall construction includes combustible materials (e.g., siding, exterior wall sheathing, etc.).
The 18-inch clearance shall be measured perpendicular to the wall surface. Clearances may be
reduced per IMC Table 308.4.2. See IMC Section 506.3.6.
4. The duct is shown running up the exterior wall and along the roof. The duct does not appear
to be enclosed or constructed of a rated zero-clearance duct. The duct shall have a minimum
18-inch clearance to all surfaces containing combustible construction per IMC Section 506.3.6.
Clearances may be reduced per IMC Table 308.4.2. Documentation substantiating the reduced
clearance shall be submitted for review. The exhaust fan shall maintain a minimum clearance
of 18 inches from combustible construction per IMC Section 506.5.4.
5. The building section shows a single support bracket along the vertical run of the duct; no
bracket is shown along the horizontal run. Duct spans and supports shall be designed for wind
loading per IBC Sections 1604.1 and 2306.1, and ASCE 7-10 Chapter 30. Supports shall not
exceed the spacing limits per the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards per IMC Section
603.10. Details for the supports and connections shall be provided. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
6. Up-blast fans serving Type I hoods shall be installed with a hinge, restraint, and flexible
electrical cable to permit inspection and cleaning. These do not appear to be specified. The
drawing should be revised. See IMC 506.5.3.
7. The hood appears to be partially suspended from the framing above using threaded rods and
unistrut bars. The required fasteners between the bar and framing should be specified.
Documentation verifying the connection is adequate for the supported load should be
submitted for review. See IBC Sections 107.2.1, 1604.1, and 1604.4.
This review has been performed for general compliance with the building codes as adopted and
amended by the state of Washington and the city of Everett. Corrections and comments made
during the review process do not relieve the project from compliance with code and permit
requirements. The designers-of-record are responsible for a complete design in accordance with
the laws of the state of Washington.
If you have any questions or require additional clarification, please contact us.
Respectfully,
Drew Martin, P.E., S.E.
Associate Engineer/ Commercial Plans Examiner
(425)257-8813
dmartin@everettwa.gov
S:\BMartin\2018\M1808-015.docx
16g5-e—i—o72Th
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett,WA 98201 • (425) 257-8810 • Fax(425) 257-8857
