The California based manufacturer of the clean room has hired a
California based PE to provide sealed calculations and design drawings for the clean room. This design firm shall
be considered the Specialty Structure Engineer(SSE).As the Engineer of Record (EOR) for the Access Laser
Tenant Improvement Project Harris Group has provided a review of these design documents.
General Review:
The design calculations and drawings have been reviewed to determine if code prescribed loading and design
criteria have been followed. It is Harris Groups opinion that the attached design is adequate and that the SSE has
used sound engineering methods. It should be noted that the clean room structure will not attach to the warehouse
structure.
Gravity System Review:
The clean room walls consist of aluminum strut posts with wall panel infill. The clean room ceiling consists of
aluminum trusses, stiffened aluminum struts, and posts. As the clean room will be installed within an existing
warehouse no snow load has been considered. Further, a ceiling live load of 0 PSF has been used for design.
The attached design calculations show the gravity system is adequate for the design loads.
Lateral System Review:
Seismic loading has been determined using ASCE 7 Chapter 13 for nonstructural components. This was chosen
since ASCE 7 Chapter 12 does not provide design coefficients for aluminum structures, and there is no cyclic test
data for this undefined structure. The design values from ASCE 7 Chapter 13 table 13.5-1 have been used for
"Other Flexible Components of High Deformability Elements and Attachments".This approach uses sound
reasoning.
Two types of moment connections are used to make up the lateral force resisting system of the clean room. First,
each strut beam to strut post connection has a gusset plate to obtain fixity at the connection. Second, the truss top
and bottom chords are fixed to each column to obtain fixity at the connection. Each post is attached to the slab on
grade using post installed anchors. The attached design calculations indicate the post to the slab connection has
been modeled as a pinned connection.
The attached design calculations show the lateral system is adequate for the design loads.
Post Bearing Check:
The SSE indicates the slab bearing check shall be per the EOR.Worst case post compression on Frame F2=
23431b. Existing slab is 6"thick.Assume 4"post base and 1:1 load spread, load area is (4"+6"+6")^2/144=
1.78SgFt. Soil bearing is 2343lb/1.78SgFt= 1316PSF<2000PSF. Therefore, post bearing is OK.
Sincerely,
Alejandro M Warner PE
Our difference is engineered. 300 Elliott Ave.W.
Suite 500
Seattle,WA 98119
(206)494-9400
www.harrisoroup.com
