This approach seems counter-
productive, as it reinforces lightly loaded elements and ignores the majority of
the heavily loaded elements. We estimate the cost of reinforcing or bridging
BOE/NG the 271 lightly loaded elements to be at least $150,000 to $300,000.
3. Adopting the 2003 IEBC for structural alterations will allow Boeing to
approach the upgrade of the lateral system in a much more systematic and
consistent manner. Boeing has agreed to a voluntary upgrade of the tension-
only bracing system in the walls of the structure. This will significantly
improve the building's seismic performance. Boeing has chosen to design this
voluntary upgrade to resist a minimum of 75% of the 2003 IBC seismic
forces. This is the force Ievel that would be required by the 2003 IEBC if the
seismic base shear had increased by more than 5%.
This approach is consistent with good engineering design practice, and will
address most of the heavily loaded elements which might otherwise be
ignored.
4. A complete structural analysis has been made to ensure the altered building
will be in full compliance with the 2003 IBC for all vertical load
combinations.
We appreciate your consideration of this request, and we look forward to your
earliest response. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this further, please
call me at any time.
Sincerely,
Dirac H.
