STATEMENT September 20,1966 RE: lart164/8[41,,PlgiRatTRE Over the past several months, in working with the Fire Chief,Ray Smith,it has become apparent to me that m,01-01 411. steps must be taken to obtain new fire fighting equipment for the Everett Fire Department. In my judgment,there- it m.m fore.it is necessary to take steps immediately to acquire two fire PumPers. Since the measure was placed on the ballot the Council has decided that the need for the equipment Is immediate and Its acquisition cannot be made to depend upon the success of a special levy. Therefore,the Council hes instructed the Chief of the Fire Department to prepare specifications to enable the City of Everett to immediately call for bids upon 0on fire pumpers. speciZaWMVIlef=enh:ndlida%:14d1O7eLtr B=11 additional fire pumpers In 1967. In my judgment,this capital addition is necessary Roth to provide for the public safety. Further, in my judgment, this equipment may be paid for within the frame work of existing anticipated revenues by purchasing said equipment on cOnditional sales contracts. Further,I am confident that the street bond Issue before the electorate this day will be passed. In such yen:the burden upon the tax'ayers of the City of Everett should not be Increased if at all possible. The issue in removing the fire issue from the ballot is not a change in the form of Everett city government. That matter is a separate and distinct governmental consid- eration.
