,41P0O/% 1 <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 5692 <br /> A RESOLUTION of the City of Everett to honor the of life of Rosa <br /> Louise Parks, a woman whose courage helped spark the civil <br /> rights movement <br /> WHEREAS, On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Ala., Rosa Parks quietly <br /> refused to give up her seat in the "colored" section of a bus to a white man when the driver <br /> ordered her to because the"white"section was full; and <br /> WHEREAS, Rosa Parks, who then worked as secretary and youth leader for the <br /> National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), was arrested that day for <br /> refusing to give up her seat; <br /> WHEREAS, that simple act by Rosa Parks led to the legendary Montgomery bus boycott <br /> and helped spark the civil rights movement and the subsequent desegregation of our society; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, throughout her life, Rosa Parks continued her civil rights work as a staffer <br /> for Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and through her non-profit organization, the Rosa and <br /> Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development; and <br /> WHEREAS, Rosa Parks was honored several times for her civil rights work including the <br /> NAACP's Springarn Medal in 1979, the Martin Luther King Jr. Non-violent Peace Prize in 1980, <br /> the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999; and <br /> WHEREAS, Rosa Parks was the first woman and second African American to be <br /> honored upon her death with a Capitol Rotunda viewing, a place typically reserved for <br /> presidents and war heroes; and <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND EVERETT CITY <br /> COUNCIL THAT: <br /> November 2, 2005 be Rosa Parks Day in the City of Evere -•: - •a •3- community <br /> members to work with the same determination shown by 'a".
