RESOLUTION NO. 4895 A RESOLUTION in support of the Everett Police Department's continued involvement and emphasis in the Everett School District Elementary Schools. WHEREAS, for a number of years the City's Police Department has had a partnership with the Everett School District through the DARE Program which has provided the police officers an opportunity to have a positive effect on Everett's students while providing an opportunity for a school based policing program; and WHEREAS, the DARE Program provided certain limitations in the school based policing program by limiting the scope of the officers' ability to interface with the students as well as the scope of the program itself; and WHEREAS, the Everett School District is implementing a new health and fitness program curriculum that will be covering many of the same points covered by the DARE Program; and WHEREAS, the Elementary School Police Officer Program will provide for the presence of three commissioned police officers to serve the district's elementary schools. Further, to provide the officers with the opportunity to act as teachers, mentors, and counselors; and WHEREAS, this program provides the flexibility to better partner with the Everett School District in addressing the needs of the elementary schools and provides a better and broader foundation for an effective school based policing program from the Police Department's perspective; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds that a police officer's presence in Everett's schools is important and the Elementary School Resource Officer Program will provide for an expanded role for its officers in the schools; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVERETT THAT: THE CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE EVERETT POLICE DEPARTMENT'S CONTINUING PARTNERSHIIP WITH EVERETT SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE EVOLUTION OF THE SCHOOL BASED POLICING PROGRAM, AND THE IMROVED SERVICE TO EVERETT'S SCHOOLS THROUGH THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM.
